Install Free Maps on Garmin Edge

Garmin Edge/bike computer is an ultimate cycling system created by Garmin. If you love cycling, you must give it a try. The only challenge with these mapping units is, they charge profoundly, for new map updates.

Users are looking for free map updates to Install Free Maps on Garmin, congratulations, you have reached at the right place.

With the methods we’ve explained here, you can easily install free maps on Garmin Edge. These steps can be followed for many Garmin Edge units such as 500, 820, 800, 810, and 1000.

Before we initiate the process, some requirements need to be followed carefully to avoid annoying situations. Let’s have a look:

  1. You will require a computer (windows/mac or it will work with Linux as well). You will not be able to update Garmin Edge through the iPad.
  2. You will need a micro SD card in case there is very little space left to download new updates.
  3. You will also require a Garmin connect account and Garmin Express app to download and install new map updates regularly.

Users can also Download Open Street Maps to Garmin Edge 520 devices for free.

To install the maps, users need to follow only a couple of steps. These steps are very convenient to perform.

So, shall we begin?

Let’s start.

How to get a cycling map?

Though the process of Garmin Edge 520 Map Update is pretty easy and convenient, you must take care while doing it. Follow each step carefully and precisely as we mentioned here to avoid any trouble.

Here are the steps:

  1. First, visit the open street map site or click on the link http://garmin.openstreetmap.nl/. This website allows users to download free maps.
  2. Now, set the map to the bike maps (Well, this step is vital, so choose your option carefully). If anyhow you miss this step, you would not be able to use the information properly.
  3. Now, select the area for which you are looking for an update, or if you want, you can choose the entire country.

Tip: Well, wisely go for this option, because if you choose the entire country, the map size will be too big to fit on the internal storage of your device.

3. You can also select the required area manually to receive the latest update.

Once the downloading process completes, you need to install the maps. Let’s move to the installation process:

  1. For this, go to the download folder and look for the openfietsmap_lite_gmapsupp.zip file.
  2. Unzip this folder and search for a file named gmapsupp.img.
  3. Now, copy this file on your Garmin Edge device with the help of the USB (wait till it is mounted as an external device.)

Important: The process is similar for both Windows and Mac users.

  1. Now, go back to the download folder and rename the gmapsupp file to gmapbmap. (Don’t change the extension .img.)
  2. Now, overwrite your maps (if you want) and wait for it to finish the process.

If you are using Garmin Edge 1030, the same steps can be followed for Garmin Edge 1030 Map Update.

Tip: In case you choose to delete the old maps and then download the new Map. You need to clear the trash folder as well.

When everything is done, safely eject your Garmin Edge and reboot it before you start using it. After rebooting, new updates load on your device.
